National Map Graphics Project

The National Map concept is based on the vision of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to provide public access to current, high-quality geospatial base map data from multiple sources.  This same concept was used in developing the 7 framework layers for Texas.  More formally known as the Texas Strategic Mapping Program (StratMap), partnerships were formed with Federal, State, and local governments to develop consistent statewide base map data.  As the state GIS clearinghouse for Texas, the Texas Natural Resources System (TNRIS) had the responsibility to house and distribute the StratMap base map data through an on-line delivery system.  The idea that these layers could be used to support the re-creation of the USGS 7.5 minute topographic map was presented to the USGS as a way to show value of the StratMap data.  In 2007, TNRIS was awarded a grant from the U.S. Geological Survey to develop a process for creating a 7.5 minute topographic map product using current and consistent geospatial data layers available to Texas. The 3 areas of study were chosen based on population, proximity to the coast, and based on special mapping provisions.

The focus of this project is to develop an automated map production process for creating the USGS 7.5 minute topograpic maps. Updates to the project area feature layers and all process documentation for file export and printing processes are also part of the project delivery requirements. As an added feature to the project, TNRIS also created this website to distribute all relevant project information as well as the project deliverables.

There are a number of important uses for the USGS topographic maps that go beyond traditional recreational uses.  By implementing automated production process to develop these maps, more products can be acheived by adding more layers that will answer questions for emergency response, community planning, agriculture, and much more.  This pilot project serves as a spring board for continued research and development in streamlining map production processes.

Project Communication

TNRIS has created a blog to assist in communicating project related information to project stakeholders and the general public. We encourage any feedback regarding the map content and locational accuracy.  This blog will be updated as needed to communicate relevant project information. Click here to access the NMGP Blog.

Layer Spotlight

Layer Spotlight is a new way to showcase the rich, extensive geographic data housed at TNRIS. It is a chance to view and explore a data layer before downloading.

It is part of the implementation of a new data viewing application incorporating Microsoft Virtual Earth® software. In the future, as TNRIS further develops its data dissemination tools, keep an eye out for even more robust and dynamic applications.
